Healthy People, A Healthy Society and Global Peace

These can be ours now if we take the time to

Understand the World Around Us.

I did not come across these ideas easily. I did not set out to solve any problems or make any great discoveries. All I wanted was to understand the world around me. I studied what attracted my attention without any specific agenda but either luck or providence led me to many insights which I am convinced are a solid foundation to establish a new foundation for society. I started both of my books with a quote of Albert Einstein. He said, "We shall require a substantially new way of thinking if mankind is to survive". I did not seek to solve this riddle but I think that I have a good proposal to offer.

This project began when I was studying Alternative Medicine in the 1990's. I was looking at how the mixing of eastern philosophy into western traditional medicine promised to transform western medicine. Ancient eastern philosophy, having a more spiritual bias, resulted in a very holistic approach to wellness and disease.

The western analytical processes developed a system where we polarize and fragment our reality. As a result our Optimal Health requires our efforts at becoming whole again. The major fragments are body, mind, emotions and soul. Disease of the body may in large part be preventable. Restoring healthy minds requires truth, restoring healthy emotional life requires justice and having a healthy spiritual life requires individual liberty.

As I reflected on what I had written, it became clear that Enduring Peace requires us to be striving for Optimal Health as outlined in my book. In our process of fragmentation, we made a division between personal health and social health. Social health has the same four categories as personal health and the same four factors are critical for optimal social health. Prevention, Truth, Justice, Liberty are the keys to social health. Here the onus for proper action is on the government. It might seem odd but there is a precedent in eastern culture. Two Chinese spiritual books the Tao Te Ching and the I Ching both make frequent reference to how government should conduct itself. I'll quote Stephen Mitchell's translation of the Tao "When a country is in harmony with the Tao, the factories make tractors and trucks. When a country goes counter to the Tao, warheads are stockpiled outside the cities." There are many other examples but the point is; our government acts in our name and we are responsible for it's actions. We as a society can not be healthy unless our governments act responsibly.

My first book: "Why Alternative Medicine and Why Now?" is a Primer on Holistic Medicine. I try to establish a foundation or overview for Holistic Health. The insights shared here are my own and I believe that they are the basis of the next major social transformation. We have eliminated the spiritual from our society; it's now time to restore it.
