The Becoming Whole Again Project
Becoming health requires becoming whole. - April 2003
As a physician interested in holistic medicine I had been studying the
interrelation between eastern and western philosophies. Actually, I was
interested in the interplay
of these ideas long before alternative medicine became popular in the 1990's.
First, it became obvious that traditional medicine of the west was looking at
health in a very limited way. Secondly, it became obvious that social health was
intimately related to our own personal physical health. When our bodies find
balance (peace) then we are
healthy. When our society finds harmony then we will have a true and enduring
global peace. The third thing that I noticed was that there was a lot of
resistance to any of
these new ideas.
Optimal Health
Western science requires experimentation which is based on competition. This
requires us to polarize all aspects of reality, so that we have things to
compare. In the arena of health; we first divided body and soul and the
experiment showed that the material was important and the spiritual by
inference was irrelevant. This trivialization of the spiritual has persisted
through recent western history. Later, we divided the material half into body
and mind; we also divided the spiritual into emotions and soul. These four are
the major divisions and they all must be in harmony for optimal health.
Enduring Peace
We need to confront all four of these areas on the social level also if we are
to follow the wholistic model. In other words we must look at the whole picture.
In my next newsletter I will elaborate on the personal physical aspects of this
viewpoint. Here I will focus on the social implications because this is the
connection between health and peace. I hope to establish a model of holistic
health based on four body system. The physical body, mental body, emotional body
and spiritual body. At the social level the physical body needs a properly
functioning public health system. At the mental health level; truth is the key
factor but here on a social level. Media must present an unbiased coverage with
no propaganda and government should be devoid of secrecy. Emotional health
requires: Justice - and in this case at the international level. Therefore
governments must conduct affairs with justice. Spiritual health requires
individual liberty and again this falls to government to protect freedom of
religion so that each individual can pursue their personal spiritual quests
for growth. in a democracy or representative government - the people are
responsible for the actions of government and social health is also affected by
the nature of those governing. A government that follows the above principles is
the only path to a true and enduring global peace.
My Book & Website
I wrote a book "Why Alternative Medicine and Why Now?" which elaborates about
the above concepts. It was written as a print-on-demand format - therefore the
cost is higher than I would like but I needed to get a message out that I felt
was urgently needed. The easiest way to find it is either through my website or
online through sites like Amazon.com .
My website can be found at www.BecomingWholeAgain.com
. I include this just in case you choose to circulate this newsletter to your
friends.
The Becoming Whole Again Project
This may take a while to sink in but there is a direct link between health and
PEACE. As a result, this has become a peace movement of sorts. Einstein
apparently said, "We will require a substantially new way of thinking, if
mankind is to survive. I also understand that Buckminster Fuller said that "In
the 21st century, either war will become obsolete or the human race will.
The New Way of Thinking has to do with our approach to the duality that we have
created in order to effect our scientific analysis. The choices are simply to
see the poles of reality as being mutually exclusive opposites and others see
the poles of reality as being two parts of the whole picture that need to be
restored to balance because the separation that we originally made was
artificial.
The point is that we are not enemies. We are all on the same team trying to
bring the world back into balance. Most competitions and especially wars are
failures to assert our belief that we are in fact "spiritual beings".
THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR. Our scientific method has convinced some of
our leaders that they are "material beings" and that soul is an illusion.
Therefore they feel that they have a duty to control world events. The
majority of people believe that we are "spiritual beings". Our leaders use this
against us by speaking of religion as if they believed in it. We assume they
believe in spirit but if they did then truth, justice, individual liberty
along with a public health system with the best interest of each individual
would all be securely in place at all times.
