Western Medicine specializes in the physical body. We have made fantastic advances in treating diseases. Scientific advances and discoveries are truly amazing. The thing that is disturbing is that so many people have so many diseases. It seems the more treatments we discover; the more people are getting sick. It seems that we in western society have lost sight of being healthy and have focused on treatment. Recently there have been many alternative theories presented about how we might treat or even cure diseases. This is a large subject but there are a few areas of special interest that if pursued may radically improve our state of health. Three of particular interest are the diet debate; the debate on hormone replacement therapy and the third is the approach to psychiatry and psychotropic medications (which includes ADD). Another area that critically important is our intake of toxic chemicals from many sources ranging from pesticides on foods to antibiotics and hormones fed to livestock and contamination of our water supply and air. *** One key diet debate is about macronutrients and what proportions of protein, carbohydrates and fats are best for us. Then the better understanding of micronutrients like vitamins, minerals and enzymes and their importance for our health is becoming much better understood recently. Again this is a very large subject yet I will pick one topic to comment upon. In the end, I suspect that the low carbohydrate theories will prove to have a very powerful and beneficial effect on our society. Many people are choosing to be vegetarians, vegans or are even trying to stick to raw food diets. This choice may be for environmental or other reasons but even here; the amount of sugar and vitamins and minerals in the diet will likely prove to be the factor that affects our health the most. Unfortunately the fruits and vegetables that taste the best are highest in sugar, carbohydrates. Some popular low carbohydrate titles include: The Paleo Diet: Lose Weight and Get... Dr. Atkins' Three-Book Package: New Diet... The Carbohydrate Addict's Lifespan... The Carbohydrate Addict's Diet: The... Nourishing Traditions: The Cookbook... Can natural therapies be effective and safer than current pharmaceuticals. This is a difficult area to tackle because of the inherent inertia to change because of the tremendous amount of money being made in this field. Hormone replacement therapy is a great example of the controversy in this field. The fact that natural hormones cannot be patented may have resulted in their being ignored. Dr. John Lee M.D. has been a leader in this field and he has written several books on the subject. What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About... What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About... What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About... Natural Hormone Balance for Women: Look... The western approach to psychiatric problems is primarily pharmacological. We continually seek new drugs to solve all of our problems. This is unfortunate. Later, I will expand this area but for now, some interesting titles are listed. Toxic Psychiatry: Why Therapy, Empathy,... Your Drug May Be Your Problem: How and... Reclaiming Our Children: A Healing... Avoiding Toxins is the next area of importance. Society has seen many advances however these improvements are associated with pollution of our environment. Our Stolen Future: Are We Threatening... I could go on and on but I'd like to keep this a short overview. A few general books that give a great overview of fascinating new ways to think about approaching our medical problems are listed below. Optimal Wellness is a short book by one of my hero's; Dr, John Lee M.D. It should become a classic because it is a pioneering work which shows a great insight into what is wrong and how to fix it. Alternative Medicine: The Definitive Guide: a good effort to summarize available information. As Far as web resources for your health related questions : I recommend Dr. Mercola's web site as a great foundation for alternative information. www.mercola.com Mathias Rath M.D.Dr. Rath has worked with Linnus Pauling and his research suggests that we could reverse heart disease with simple nutritional interventions. He accuses the pharmaceutical industry of ..... Dr Rath has studied AIDS in Africa and found that nutritional approaches could possibly do more for these people than all the expensive drugs which we in western society are offering. Dr. Rath has also been in the forefront of the battle to preserve our rights to nutritional supplements. Most people do nor realize that our rights to buy nutrients is even being threatened. There is an international effort to restrict access to nutritional supplements by the WHO which is called Codex Armetatium?. Joel Wallach - "The Mineral Doctor" has proposed that many diseases have their basis in deficiencies of minerals. I still have a few of his old audiotapes "Dead Doctors Don't Lie" and could arrange to send them for a small donation if you e-mail me.
